What’s New in Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard?
Desktop - Increase productivity and enjoy a new look that features a refined user interface,
including a transparent menu bar, reflective Dock, and updated windows for a consistent
design theme. Quickly access files and reduce desktop clutter using Stacks on the Dock.
Finder - Click on places, devices, shared computers, and searches in the new sidebar that’s
grouped into categories. Flip through files visually using Cover Flow, which is just like using
the sidebar and Cover Flow in iTunes. Find files on any Mac in a local network using a more
powerful Spotlight search built into Finder.
Quick Look - Save time by taking a sneak peak at the contents of a multiple-page
document or video without opening them first. Click the Quick Look icon or tap the Space
bar to see a file in a separate Quick Look window, or view it in full-screen mode.
Mail - Communicate with friends in style using 30 professionally designed stationery
templates. Save time moving between applications by keeping important notes and
tracking to-do items from right within Mail. Stay updated on RSS feed updates just like
seeing new email messages.
Time Machine - Keep an up-to-date copy of important files such as photos, music, and
movies. Recover files in seconds using Time Machine’s ability to remember how the system
looks every day, from files to windows. Find lost files by flipping through each day or by
using a Spotlight search. (Time Machine requires an external hard drive.)
iChat - Present movies, presentations, photos, and virtually any document during your chats
using iChat Theater. Turn your video chat sessions into a fun event with a range of Photo
Booth special effects. Save both audio and video chats so that they can be shared with
colleagues or sync them to an iPod and play them on the go.
Spaces - Organize windows and reduce clutter when moving from task to task by grouping
applications into categories, like communicating (a space for iChat and Mail) or video
production (a space for iMovie and iDVD). Move quickly between each space using
keyboard shortcuts, move applications between spaces, or add a new space with ease.
What’s Still Great about Mac OS X
Productivity - Complete daily tasks and creative pursuits in record time using features like
Exposé, Dashboard, and Spotlight.
Compatibility - Access local and remote networks, hook up cameras, printers, and other
devices thanks to a range of built-in drivers and the use of industry standards.
Stability - Work throughout the day without the constant worry of system crashes, security
threats, or bugs that plague competing systems.
Connectivity - Keep in contact with friends and family using Wi-Fi access, email, and instant
messaging built right into Mac OS X.
The top features in Mac OS X v10.5
Spaces
Group application windows together - Leopard's Spaces feature is a quick and convenient way to organize files and applications for instant, clutter-free access.
Quick switching - When you are ready to move from one activity to another, you quickly switch Spaces to swap one group of windows with another.
Bird's-eye view - Spaces provides a "bird's-eye" view, so you can find what you're looking for fast and rearrange your spaces and the items in each space.
iChat
Improved text chat - Among many improvements, now you can keep all of your chat windows consolidated together in one clean tabbed interface. Even group chat rooms can be pulled into iChat's tabbed chat window. You can also log into multiple .Mac, AOL, Google Talk and Jabber accounts at once.
iChat Theater - Students can show-and-tell from anywhere with iChat Theater videoconferencing. Teachers can give a full Keynote presentation, accompanied by a live video feed of them making the delivery.
Screen sharing - Screen sharing in iChat lets educators and students, with proper authorization and security, remotely observe and control the display of another computer—from across the room or across the globe.
Boot Camp
Native speed and compatibility - Boot Camp supports the most popular 32-bit releases of Windows XP and Windows Vista. When you use either operating system on your Mac, your Windows applications will run at native speed.
Simple installation - Setup is simple—only three steps. Partition the hard drive, install Windows, and install the Boot Camp drivers.
Mac device drivers - The installer will automatically open and install a complete suite of Windows device drivers, including those for Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB, FireWire, Bluetooth, and PCI, as well as Apple-specific hardware such as the iSight camera, Apple Remote, trackpads, volume, brightness, and eject keys.
Accessibility
New Braille options - Leopard's Braille options and support--even during installation--help visually impaired students get the most out of education technology.
A new voice - Alex, a new English male voice in Leopard, is easier to understand, thanks to its natural breathing and intonation. That leads to fewer comprehension mistakes when working with text-to-speech.
More powerful VoiceOver - Leopard's bundled applications have been enhanced for better accessibility, and VoiceOver is more customizable and more flexible, letting you do more than ever with VoiceOver.
Time Machine
Increased data security - Because Time Machine keeps an up-to-date copy of everything on a Mac, you can always go back in time to recover the file you need.
Peace of mind - Time Machine can completely restore a Mac to the way it was, so you don't have to worry about your data--or even your computing environment.
Easy setup - Setup for Time Machine is as simple as plugging in an external hard drive that's bigger than the one in your Mac. Leopard will ask you if you'd like to use that drive for Time Machine. That's it--use the time saved setting up a backup solution on something else.
Everything Else
Improved Desktop - Users enjoy the fit and finish of a refined user interface, and the semitransparent menu bar and reflective 3D Dock emphasize this. The new Stacks feature means that your customers can work more efficiently and quickly access files by avoiding clutter on the desktop.
Efficient Finder - Users can take advantage of Cover Flow, an improved sidebar, and improved Spotlight search to easily find the files they need, meaning they spend less time looking and more time doing. Additionally, customers with a .Mac account will appreciate the convenience of remotely accessing their computers with Back to My Mac.
Quick Look file preview - Users can save time by taking a sneak peak at the contents of a multiple-page document or video without opening it first, saving time that would be spent opening applications, and helping customers more quickly find the right file.
Extras that make your life easier
Portable Hard Drive - to recover lost documents, music, and photos using an external hard drive with Time Machine.
Apple Cinema HD Display (23 flat panel) - using larger or multiple displays gives more room to spread out application, working files, and windows.
