Long spear drill, again a two handed drill, the "seat" is the only control of the mount. The rider must control the animal by leg command and shift of weight alone, a smart horse and a confident rider can do this .

Wow I can't get over how awkward that saddle must be! :) I bet they are really hard to ride.

 

Lol his helmet looks a little less goofy from that angle.

Awkward perhaps ..but ..these guys were flying! and delivering missles .

I think the size of the tough little ponies is important-this would be very much like the native American preference for smaller sinewy animals over heavyweight chargers.You have a tight turning circle, sure footedness and endurance.
