  1. I think we have to consider would there be the USA if Rome survived. Perhaps Britain would not exist, and the formation of USA could not make sense. Suppose she is here today, I agree with Severus that Rome and the USA are very unlike. They are culturally different, but I do not think Rome would have a lower technology level since she would still develop just like Europe today. One more thing, remember if Europe is unified, WWI & II would not take place and she would not be weakened; USA would not gain benefits; Europe Union could be just like the US.
  2. When I see the title, the first name I can think of is Constantinople =w= This city was too remarkable in the 15th century though.
  3. Why had Theodosius destroyed it? And where is it excatly? Somewhere in Turkey?
  4. It is true that China could compete with the so-called SPQR when she rose again :') Add that Sui was murdered by his son Sui (the 2nd), and most importantly was that his son was no good king, not at all. if Sui came to the throne and the murder case still happened in history, perhaps Rome would fall even faster than original. I am glad for you are so interested in Chinese history =]]]]*
  5. Thank you!! I really want to see the book you suggest, but unluckily I am not living in USA and cannot make an order at Amazon. I guess I will have to look for it in bookstores =w= Actually it is just for personal interest. Recently I am writing a story set in the Roman times, and would like to add in a role, Magister Militum. Fearing that the people, places and time do not make sense, I ask if anyone can give me some hints =]" The story is set in Antioch, by the way.
  6. Well I brought up China just by accident...= =, since I don't notice it myself. The time when Western Roman Empire fell, i.e. AD 476, it was South & North Dynasties in China. During the era the kingdom of China was split into two, the north and the south. Emperors changed frequently; the living environment was not really that good. It was until 589 when King Sui (I dunno if it is the right name..) unify the two sides and brought China to the Sui Dynasty. However life of the people was not improved until 618. Within the 200 years of the fall of China, she could not possibly compete with Rome. And as I study Chinese history, it is obvious that the Chinese seldom invaded other nations. Also, it was until the 19th-20th century, European nations started to have their influence against Chinese history. So you say China and Europe were not quite really related.
  7. It is quite an interesting idea. But you have to consider... 1. The Western empire fell in 476, but the the Eastern. Some what do you think about the left behind Byzantine Empire? 2. Inner political system, economy, invasions of barbarians and other matters brought the empire to an end; would they not happen to a republic? 3. The Roman Empire, actually, had doomed for many years though apparently it still existed. That means the goverment was very weak at that time. Would it splited up like Europe nowadays, without a real word "destroyed" - as in fact it was? 4. Imagine if it survived, the history afterwards would be completely different. Perhaps no Feudalism, no Renaissance, no Revolutionary time, no USA ( ), no Napoleon, no imperialism (or yes, maybe), and surely, no WWI, WWII and Cold War. With a world that is totally different, well, I dare not to imagine. Just think about your very own life; you are from USA, right? Perhaps there would be no you?! Or maybe you are in Europe and speak Latin and Greek ? And about me, I am from Hong Kong. Perhaps there would be no Britain to colonize Hong Kong and - ah, very luckily - still a happy city in China , perhaps? and um...what if there is no World Cup? Italia cannot win?!?! /__\"
  8. Thank you very much! But I have a question... a. There were magistri in the empire b. There were magistri in some particular regions or provinces c. There were magistri in every province Which of the statement is correct?
  9. "we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation." - Martin Luther King
  10. I search on wikipedia but also find Southwater is located in the south of UK. Information states that this place had been burned down, as you said about the place you want to know about. The earliest buildings in Southwater are Medieval in date, although the origins of the village may go further back. until c.1914, when it burned down

    Antioch

I am working on a research of the four major city of Roman Empire, and now need some books on the ancient city of Syrian Antioch. Can anyone recommend me some good books?
  12. I agree with that as Roman culture really influences the world very deeply, which can be shown in many aspect like politics, economy and cultural development. (Examples: Latin transformed to European languages like Italian, French and Spanish; Greco-Roman style buildings and art works construct in the Renaissance or even nowadays.)
  13. interesting poll =) I vote for Dominate as I personally feel interested in this period the most.
  14. Perhaps it gets people taking too much pleasure in it and they fail to resist the enemies together when under attack.
  15. Roman culture is very different from the others. It contains a little of ancient Greek style, combines with its own coastal Mediterranean culture and forms a unique civilization. Also, European history influences the world the most, and Rome is one of the most important part in European history in many ways like politics, economy and culture, affecting the development of world history afterwards in the Renaissance, age of revolutions and the WWI and WWII. That makes Roman history a lot more interesting more the history of other places.
  16. This is good. Thank you. But I need more information on the Magister Militum. I have been searching it on Wikipedia but only find an incomplete list of the magistri. I would like to have a complete one with detail information about the names and regions.
  17. I think if you want an answer that is beside the Roman stuff, I would say Genghis Khan is the greatest leader. The land he had conquered was even larger than Alexander the Great. What I study at school in the subject of Chinese History, we called that "Wong Wo", for the Eastern Europe was scared of Genghis Khan. He built four "hon guok" (something like states, I am not sure) in Asia Minor, Middle East and Asia, and invaded China, started the Yuen dynasty, which was the first dynasty started by non-Chinese.
  18. Once I have read a book, which stated that marriages between Romans and barbarians were forbidden.
  19. I am doing a research on Roman warfare, and I would like to have a list of Magistri Militum of the Roman Empire. So I hope if anybody can share it to me. Thank you very much!!
