No. Vercingetorix did not understand the Roman way of war in that once he had descided to make a static defense as opposed to mobile he sealed his fate. He didn't appreciate the fact that the Romans were the undisputed masters of siege warfare. The Roman victories in the late republic/early empire could be attributed as much to the use of the shovel as the sword. See Sulla's campaigns in Greece, Mark Antony's of Mutina and Phillipi, and Titus' Jerusalem.

I can't think to much about this subject but why does Hollywood feel the need to be fictitious, or embelish? The true story is often more fascinating. Wouldn't you all love to see a factual movie about P. Clodius Pulcher, what a story. Or an account of Scipio, or Claudius Marcellus, I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get the picture, I just wish Hollywood would too.

Legions were actually recruited outside of Italy as well as inside during this period (Caesar's Legio X was Spanish). Auxilary units were mostly recruited from outside of Italy. The one standard unifying factor was the compulsary learning of latin as all orders were given in that language and most of the senior officers would have been roman. The often brutal discipline of roman military service meant you either learned quickly or paid the consequences.

I find it hard to understand why anyone would place Hannibal above P. Cornelius Scipio Africanus! Scipio ran rampant in Spain checkmating the Carthaginians at every encounter with inferior in number forces. He showed his flexibility as a commander by taking Nova Carthago by seige warfare, then defeating Hasdrubal at Illipa in a brilliant manouver. Then he paid Hannibal the compliment by beating him with his own tactics at Zama. Hannibal was a great general, no doubt. But he seems to have been left wanting in the intelligence department for he seriously underestimated just who he was up against. I can just imagine what went through his mind when he received the response to his demands from Rome after Cannae. "WHOOPS"
