  1. What's wrong with you people living on the 'other side.' Everyone knows that the real civilized people of Britannia is behind the wall. 'Behind' the wall from whose point of view? North or South?
  2. Very nice. Thanks for sharing. Were the dromedaries used as fighting latforms or simply for mobility in the desert?
  3. Sounds great. How about Chow Yun Fat as Scipio? Has to be up there with the Steven Seagal-playing-Genghis Khan biopic that failed to come to fruition a couple of years back.
  4. According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_numerals#IIII_or_IV.3F 'The notation of Roman numerals has varied through the centuries. Originally, it was common to use IIII to represent "four", because IV represented the pagan god Jupiter. The subtractive notation (which uses IV instead of IIII) has become universally used only in modern times. For example, Forme of Cury, a manuscript from 1390, uses IX for "nine", but IIII for "four". Another document in the same manuscript, from 1381, uses IV and IX. A third document in the same manuscript uses both IIII and IV, and IX. Constructions such as IIIII for "five", IIX for "eight" or VV for "ten" have also been discovered. Subtractive notation arose from regular Latin usage: the number "18" was duodeviginti or
  5. I'm from North of Hadrian's Wall originally but after years abroad, back in the UK, but in London this time.
  6. Probably seems that the present location isn't making any money for the university so they are taking a frightening risk. If it was just a case of preservation, why can't it be done at the present location?
  7. Almost certainly, although the term Wends was seemingly applied by the Franks to anyone between the Oder and Elbe as a 'Wend.'
  8. That was all I could think of, plus maybe cattle.

EU collapse? Didn't realize it had risen and done anything more than argue over fishing quotas, Chinese imports, and the shape of bananas
  10. There was little emphasis, in Han China, on heavy armoured infantry and more emphasis on archers (and of course, due to Sun Tzu a general objective of victory without battle), but that doesn't necessarily make it like the Parthians. Rome's military was not like Classical Greece's, although both emphasized heavy infantry.
  11. Being new here I hope that too. All the best to all at UNRV!!
  12. Ach, forget the haggis (that's for Burn's Night) and with all the Scotch there'll be no room inside!!
  13. To certain degrees, but Spain, for instance, provided the Empire with vast amounts of gold. I just tend to think that the 'British', despite being occupied (initially) gained more than the Empire as a whole did; relative peace (compared to earlier periods of Catuvellauni expansion, &c) and economic benefits from the proto-EU.

If you think kids in London are any brighter and politicians more effective, you're going to be sorely disappointed on this this side of the pond . But at least we're closer to Roman ruins
  15. Seems to go against the standard Australian argument that they were in fact settled by people fromPapua New Guinea who crossed to what is the Northern Territory when the seas were lower and easier to traverse.
  16. Thanks. All makes sense (at least till someone else makes me look dumb ).
  17. I got Osprey's 'Roman Auxiliary Cavalrymen' and Tacitus' 'Annals'(as I hoped I would as I dropped enough hints ).
  18. Did the reorganization of troop types lead to much discontent as military types were based on social background?
  19. For the sake of economy, after a clash, was it the norm that the discarded/used pilum collected and made reuseable?
  20. In all the books I have featuring illustrations of early imperial legionaries they predominantly are dressed in red tunics, but then you will see them in blue, green, white, etc. What are the sources on the colours worn? Were certain colours worn by certain legions or is the topic still a mater of conjecture?
