    I find in Australia at least the only people defending it are those poor damaged, but much admired souls, our fathers and grandfathers, who have been the victims of torture during war.

    In Plutarch, and probably in Sullas own memoirs now lost, he mentions finding an incapacitated faun like half man half goat just prior to his second march on Rome. It can only bable nonsense and Sulla has it removed from his sight. It's seen as some sort of omen (by his men a negative one) but Sulla usually made all omens positive - hence Felix.

    No worries - It was a good read, and I must say certain things I once thought I knew prior to reading it have altered somewhat. You probably began that process actually, so thankyou. I do need to read Cicero though.

    I tend to get depressed these days if I sit down and watch the news, or a political commentary. At the moment it's only when a person feels the pain of what is the result of their apathy that they decide to do something about it, and sadly that is so often too late.

    Clearly he has considered them, and rejected them. But you agree that both are subjective view points. I think that both these statements:- Can exsist side by side. Is a ruler who wants to be a hellenstic monarch and display the absolutist nature(if that's what one wants to accept) of his rulership not vain ?
