  1. I am still an infant in learning about Ancient Rome and Republic Rome. For some reason, I do love Caesar, again, I am still learning about him. I do think (my opinion) is that why Julius Caesar is so well know throughout Rome is because of his murder. People have been fasinated by the fact that Brutus was on of the murders. He was almost like a son to him. How could Brutus do that to his father figure?People all over the world love a martyr and that is the way they see him. Maybe that is why I like him.

Can we combine all the important men in Rome and make up a name for him?

  2. I guess the people lay the flowers as a tribute to Caesar. I was so surprised when the young woman, in her late 20s did it. I really wanted to go ask, but I didn't.

One thing that always strikes me is that people keep laying flowers on the altar, and not just around this time of the year. Does anyone know if there's a particular reason for it?
  3. I like this movie, but to see it as a historical movie, it is not. It is a good movie to watch with children. My boys loved it. They liked the fact that it had a young boy who was the main character. I thought Colin Firth was funny.

  4. Although it wasn't the greatest movie, my children really liked it. It is not true to form, but with a young boy being the main story, it was easy for them to enjoy. Watch it with an open mind and know it is kind of a kid movie, that is my opinion also.

DO NOT GET THE LAST LEGION

I do not rate it highly at all, but that is my opinion

  5. I really liked that movie. It was nice to see Sulla in a movie. I thought Chris Noth was really good as Pompey. Jeremy Sisto, I just loved as Caesar. I just saw another side of Caesar with this movie. I can see why people would love Caesar from this movie.

I love HBO's Rome, Hinds was wonderful. I though the actor that played Pompey Magnus was good, I just felt he was too old. Pompey was about (give or take) 47 when he married Julia.

The Jeremy Sisto "Julius Caesar" had some nice moments. Sulla was presented as the wicked old villain that he was. The depiction of Pompey was among the best I've seen -- you could actually imagine him as the sort for whom Caesar would carry water. Christopher Walken as Cato was simply funny (and, again, TOO OLD). While Sisto was a good young Caesar, he didn't hold a candle to the Hinds performance in HBO's Rome which was pitch perfect.
  6. :) UGH! I had a whole message written, hit the wrong button. Curse of Long Nails!

Claude Ranes and Vivien Leigh did a move in 1945, It is awful. Vivien Leigh protrays Cleopatra as a nutter, wide eyes little butterfly. She skips about the palace. Needless to say, I could not finish it. I do like Ben Hur, I saw it when I was little, so I have a different perspective when I saw that. A couple of weeks agao, I tried to watch Quo Vadis and The Fall of the Roman Empire. I just could not do it. And I love old movies.

I do like Julius Caesar with Jeremy Sisto. I just saw a different side of Caesar. Plus I like that Sulla was in a movie. More Sulla! I still like Gladiator, no matter what the history licence is. But the more I am learning about Rome's History, the more I can really pay attention to the details of the movie. I would hope that when people see some movies on Rome, they would research all they can. If it wasn't for Anne of the Thousand days, which I read in 6th grade, I would not have a BA in History. The Tudors did drive me crazy because they really played with history, but as I got over it, I could enjoy it.

    Salve all,

  7. It is funny! Rufus means red hair. But I have red hair! (auburn) And both my boys have natural red highlights mostly in the summer. You those Roman summers!

But does this mean that I, Ateria Decembrina could be married to Lucius Hedius Rufus Lollianus Abitus?? Or am I just his cocubine? Nanny for the boys???

Thank you again, you must have so much fun doing what you do. I hope I can find something fun like that to do!

Thanks What fun, can't wait to tell them! Thank you again!

dianamt54, your sons are descended from a branch of the family of the consul of 144 CE, Lucius Hedius Rufus Lollianus Avitus, and so they both bear the nomen gentilicium of "Hedius".

Their praenomina are Decimus and Vibius, abbreviated as "D." and "V."

Their cognomina differ, as their father wished to have his sentiments regarding their birth expressed separately in each of their names. And so one bears the cognomen of "Exoratus" (meaning "wished for; prayed for") while the other bears the cognomen of "Donatius" (meaning "bestowed; given").

    Their full Roman names are:

    D. Hedius Exoratus

    = deueodbkriaehtx -bek +uss

    and

    V. Hedius Donatius

    = dteidunahobviex -bex +uss

  9. My mom was born and raised in Florence, Italy. Growing up, I always like Florence better than Rome. Then I saw Gladiator and my interest in Rome just grew. I watched Julius Caesar with Jeremy Sisto and loved it. Then came the HBO Rome and that was it for me. This past November I was in Italy with my boys and we spent three days in Rome, not enough, but just to be there! I have been to Rome several times and my parents would just run though it, saying here is that, here is this, just looking at stuff and not knowing what it was I was looking at. This time with my boys being 10 and 7, I wanted them to know what they were looking at. I did a lot of research (so I thought) on the Forum and Republic Rome. Again, not enough, This was the first time I actually walked through the forum. It was FANTASTIC! I was overwhelmed to know who had walked these same roads I was walking. To see where Julius Caesar's funeral was almost brought me to tears. A woman, I would say in her twenties, laid a rose on the site! Amazying. The Rostra was wonderful too!! So much blood spilled on those stones. Next time I go back, I am going to spend a lot more time at the forum and walk through Julius Caesar's forum.

I have been consumed with Rome since then. I have talked the ear off my boys! I point out everything that we hear and see that comes from Rome. How many tv shows use famous quote from Rome. Rome is everywhere!

    Viva Roma!

  10. In November my boys and I went to Italy. My mom was born and raised in Florence and she had an apartment for 3 months. We went for 10 days. We spent 8 days in Florence visiting relatives. and then 3 wonderful days in Rome. We walked to the forum and it was the highlight of my trip. We took a picture in front of the plaque. My mom transtalated it. So I will write it in Latin first and then the tralsation will follow.

  11. dianamt54, I think your maiden name that you PM'ed me worked much better, for the sort of gentler name/persona you wanted. Here you go!

You are the daughter of the famous jurisconsult, Aterius, and so you bear his nomen gentilicium in the feminine form.

You were born in the month of December, during the holiday of the Saturnalia. And so your father, being in a merry mood, decided to call you "Decembrina," his lovely December daughter. This became your cognomen, and the name by which others know you.

    Your full Roman name is:

    Ateria Decembrina

    = nadaiaiemretherb -h +a

I love love love it! I guess that last name Thibodeaux gets in the way of a lot of things. hahahahaha

Thank you for going to all that trouble! I don't think I would last a second in the arena!

    Thank you,

    Ateria Decembrina

  12. dianamt54, your scramble is a bit too long to work with. Could you remove your middle name from it? Thanks.

Falconius, same with yours. Could you remove your middle name from the scramble? Thanks.

    How is this?

dintaadeiahuboxThanks, I can't wait. Since I am new and still learning. Do the names mean some people are patrician or plebs?

    Thank you!
