  1. According to Wikipedia, "UK advertisements are presented by "Barry Scott", an effusive character played by Neil Burgess, who claims that Cillit Bang can remove limescale, rust and ground-in dirt, and places a copper-plated One Penny coin in Cillit Bang to demonstrate the product's cleaning ability. In another version of the advert, Barry is joined by a stereotypical housewife character, Jill, who remarks of his penny-cleaning demonstration, "You love that one, Barry!".

(The back of the container originally listed copper as a substance on which one should not use Cillit Bang; however, it has since been amended.)

    Haha!

  2. Watching the images on tv of the tsunami dragging a mountain of debris as it rushed inland has been one of the most terrifying things I have seen in quite some time. Hard to imagine what it must be like to have your whole life swept away in a matter of seconds. Truly tragic.

I do hope your dream was indeed just a dream, Caldrail. This is probably not the most pleasant way to go.

  3. I sympathise with you, Doc. It's not easy making a living as a language teacher. I worked as a freelance tutor for about 2 years after I graduated, giving mostly private lessons (in English). The best paid jobs for me though were translation jobs: I remember once I made about 3.000 Euros for 10 days worth of work translating 8-10.000 words from French into English. That was sweet. :)

  4. Last week I signed up for a 3-day "ski course". As I currently live near a ski resort, I thought I might as well give it a try - for the first time in my life! I was lucky because even though I signed up for group lessons, there were not a lot of people around so I ended up with a private instructor. By the 3rd day, I was already going down a real slope, what a rush! I'm seriously considering investing in some good equipment so that I can try it again next winter.

Sorry to hear about the Yang situation. At least you have the pure alpine air to look forward to. :)

  5. Yeah, I'm leaning towards waiting until it comes out on DVD. My father is likely to buy a pirated copy in Mozambique (where he works) so I might wait to watch it when I go visit my family in December, hehe.

As for the 2016 Olympics, I'm only following it because Rio happens to be my hometown. It's no secret it was chosen because the International Olympic Committee wanted a South American city to host it for the first time, but I sometimes wonder if this was such a wise move what with all the problems Rio is currently experiencing. Oh well, only time will tell...

  6. I've also done my duty and voted in the European and Belgian elections today. I'd say keep some the benefits achieved so far under the auspices of the EU such as the euro zone, schengen and so on and fire half the EU bureaucrats that earn far too much just to sit on their fat bottoms in Brussels.

  7. I'm just curious; is the name of the represented country priviliged information?

Well, given the fact that in the not-too-distant-past a former boss of mine threatened to sue me because she thought some of the stuff I was writing about on my blog (not this one, obviously) was "libelous", I'd rather disclose as little information about my current place of work as possible. ;)
