  1. Do you really see no difference between sensible religious people who can be good and decent citizens in a modern, secular country minding their own business, and extremists like Dominionists and the Taliban supporters whose beliefs preclude them from such?

I do see the difference. And I certainly don't think that holding religious beliefs against the swearing of oaths means that you're an extremist OR that you're seeking to subvert the govt. Nor does it mean that you believe that all laws should come from your One True God . It just means that you hold religious beliefs against the swearing of oaths. (And I certainly don't see how that one religious belief makes you somehow 'anti-American').

  2. Ursus how is a religious belief against the swearing of secular oaths "forcing belief on others" any more than denying individuals the right to vote due to those beliefs?

But I am basically saying that if people can't swear an oath to the secular rule of law and constitutional democracy because they feel their faith is the only proper foundation for a society,

Religious beliefs that forbid the swearing of oaths do not necessarily mean that the person feels that 'their faith is the only proper foundation for a society' (although many religious individuals DO feel that way- regardless of whether or not they are willing to swear secular oaths.)

then they shouldn't be allowed to operate within a secular and democratic system they don't respect.

So, in order to respect the secular democratic system, they must DISrespect their beliefs?

Their religion sucks. It's dangerous, backwards, and has no place in the modern West.

In what way are beliefs against swearing oaths "dangerous and backwards"? I would certainly never say that a person's religion (well, 99.99999% of religions) has "no place in the modern west". Remember, there are any number of people who could and WOULD say exactly the same thing about your beliefs, or mine. Does that make them right?

There are those who would and do say that worshiping multiple gods is "backwards and dangerous"...There are those who would say that those who are uncomfortable with the mentions of God in our "secular" oaths and legal processes should be barred from participating as well.

While I may not agree with another's beliefs (and I actively disagree with many, if not most, people's beliefs) I certainly don't think that it's right to deny individuals their rights as an American Citizen on those beliefs alone.

Oaths are just drama and posturing. The people who are the most eager to swear oaths of loyalty, are the ones I trust the least.

    so true!

  3. What I have a problem with is mantra chanting... especially with children who might not necessarily understand what it is they are pledging allegiance to.

Agreed 100%. I stopped saying the Pledge when it was finally explained to us...in EIGHTH GRADE IIRC what we were actually saying. The thought sickened me (that they'd teach us to say something every day for nine years without knowing what it was.) Of course, before then I knew what it meant, mostly. But if you didn't say it you were mocked by the other students, etc.

Repeating it as a mantra reduces its value, its meaning and its bond, and transforms it into an indoctrination.

Yep. We said it because we were TOLD to. Not because we MEANT it.

In fact, I'd go so far to say that those that can't swear a secular oath because they belive in theocracy (whether its Christian, Muslim, Scientologist, or whatever kind of theocracy), should be barred from voting altogether.

I wouldn't go that far, because that would essentially be denying basic citizens' rights to individuals based on their religious beliefs, which violates Separation of Church and State. (And all politics aside, it'd just piss me off. LOL)

I pledge a legion's to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for Richard Stands. One nation under guard, invisible, with liver tea and just this for all.

    LOL!!!!

  4. I won $2 on a scratch ticket- by way of finding said scratch ticket in the gas station parking lot. I went in, cashed it and took the two bucks. ;)

One school district not to far from here accidentally sold a trailer that had been used as a classroom on Ebay for $.01. They tried to back out of the sale but couldn't.

  5. This stuff is 'going south' (as we say) already. I'll be having three drinks tonight, but I'm finishing this bottle up.

And not buying this again. It's GOOD- I recommend it for a party or something where the bottle will be finished the day you open it. Don't expect it to keep. Sheesh.

    *has a sad*

  6. I actually start to wonder if he's doing it just to be anti-social, though it has to be said he did search my car fairly thoroughly.

Someone broke into your car?

I'm so sorry to hear it! Hope everything gets straightened out right quick! It's getting too cold to be riding to work in a windowless car!
