Is this a Scorpion or a Ballista? It's often difficult to tell the differance. Although I thinl it's a Scorpion.

One of those legionnaires seems to be more heavily equipped than the others, what with his greaves and better quality Imperial Gallic Helmet. It brings a lot of realism to their depiction to have that sort of detail.
-
An interesting photo, considering that I've rarelly seen a Spangenhelm fitted with a typically Roman crest.
-
Auxillaries usually were equipped with older era armour and helmets. They would wear lorica hamata instead of lorica segmentata.
-
Is that marble block a shrine to a deity? Or was a plaque to state that the soldiers had willingly fulfilled their vow to serve the army?
-
It looks similar to the landscape paintings from the eighteenth century. Those would usually have some soldiers scattered around in the paintings as well. An excellent photograph.
-
I find it curious that Roman auxillaries of the first century AD's hemets and armour are similar to those worn by Roman legionnaires of the first century BC. It's as if they've been given old fashioned Legionary equipment.

What a strange looking bunch. The centre Lemur looks confused and crazed at the same time.
-
He looks as if he's not wearing any footwear. I'm guessing that this statue was made during the 19th century as his clothing seems typical for the Victorian perception of how the Romans looked.

Good Job! I wish I could edit out pictures...

I've never seen this bust of Alexander before, yet it definately looks like him, what with the bulging neck, up-turned eyes and curly hair.
-
There are some similarities between Terry Jones and this picture...it's rather funny.
-
It certainly looks sturdier than the I, Claudius sets that would come later.
-
very late but...from which television series/film is this from?

Thank you, Pertinax. I was sure that there was very little connection between the old style martial arts and the new ones practised today. I've heard of some martial artist being knocked out by a heavy thud on the head during Kendo training.

An interesting monument. Wasn't Horus the god that stood guard over the Pharaoh?

Help, Help! I'm being repressed!
That's a good movie, haven't seen i in years. So is Life of Brian,I was thinking of watching that movie a while ago. Maybe I'll do it soon.

That's a wonderful photo Pertinax!

Plenty of healthy vegetables all round... Would the Romans have touched Turkey Twizzlers ?
-
I like Davis's Auxillary costume. You can see the native influence on his costume, facts that are held up by MacDowell who says the Romans changed their tunics regurarly to the native types worn in the territory they were moving through as their own clothes fell apart.
The Scorpions also look impressive as does the Centurion standing guard over them.
-
The Centurion is gonna beat them all up for leaving their armour lying about like that...
-
Didn't he use to expose himself to annoy some of his enemies? or have I misread a text?
-
The plain tunics make them seem extra authentic. Although there is still a lot of debate on the whole tunic colour thing.

If only I had the time to see all of these things in the flesh when I was at the museum.

I'm a big fan of Angus McBride's paintings as well. His 'Warriors and Warlords' book is well worth getting. I marvel at how he manages to produce so many detailed, well made paintings.
