Klingan 2 Report post Posted March 14, 2011 The Power of Images in the Time of Augustus by Paul Zanker should be your starting point (preferably the un-translated German version if possible).
python125 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2011 Are there any essays out there that discuss this topic? I would like to read a few to get a taste of the subject... Klingan 2 Report post Posted March 15, 2011 I think that I could possibly find a couple in Scandinavian, if that will do, but unfortunately not English. The easiest thing otherwise would probably be to look at your local university's student papers publishing site (I know that at least some unis have that). Ingsoc 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2011 I think any history book about Augustus would discuss (or at least offer references) the subject. I would suggest you pick a specific subject (such as the Ara Pacis or the Aeneis), study his function as a propaganda tool and then try to reach some general conclusions from it about Augustan propaganda. Ursus 6 Report post Posted March 15, 2011 Augustan Culture by Karl Galinsky touches on some of this.

Melvadius 4 Report post Posted March 15, 2011 Janet Huskinson's 'Experiencing Rome' has some information in a couple of the articles which may be useful relating to the imperial images including Augustus. Valerie Hope's article is probably especially useful although admittedly both reference Zanker's work in their bibliographies so I would agree with Klingon that this seems a very useful reference on the topic.
