Augustan Propoganda

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I am new to this forum I cam across it while doing some research for an essay.

I am writing an essay on The importance of propaganda in Augustan Art.

I am very new to this subject so i am not sure where to start. Can any one suggest some useful books? Or perhaps some useful essays on similar topics that can get me started?

thank you for your help.

The Power of Images in the Time of Augustus by Paul Zanker should be your starting point (preferably the un-translated German version if possible).

Are there any essays out there that discuss this topic?

I would like to read a few to get a taste of the subject...

I think that I could possibly find a couple in Scandinavian, if that will do, but unfortunately not English. The easiest thing otherwise would probably be to look at your local university's student papers publishing site (I know that at least some unis have that).

I think any history book about Augustus would discuss (or at least offer references) the subject.

I would suggest you pick a specific subject (such as the Ara Pacis or the Aeneis), study his function as a propaganda tool and then try to reach some general conclusions from it about Augustan propaganda.

Don't forget to look at the numismatic sources of Augustan art and propaganda:

Janet Huskinson's 'Experiencing Rome' has some information in a couple of the articles which may be useful relating to the imperial images including Augustus. Valerie Hope's article is probably especially useful although admittedly both reference Zanker's work in their bibliographies so I would agree with Klingon that this seems a very useful reference on the topic.
