If I read the poll literally, I must use Spartacus, as he is the only one who truly defied Roman authority. The others were foreign kings who owed no allegience to Rome.

Do we mean external foes who held their own in pitched military battles against the legions, or do we mean internal groups who had ongoing cultural and religious issues against Imperial society?

hahaha I think Brennus was the one who deffied Rome the most, sure Hannibal destroyed 30% of Italy he never got close to sacking Rome....something Brennus the Celt of the Senones tribe did back in 390 B.C. that sack was one of the most humuliating in history.

Arminius was my favourite, probably just because he's the one I know most about. Wiping out two legions in one ambush - that he himself set up. Winning the trust of Varus, so much so that dumb Varus was willing to lead his legions in a massive line 5 abreast through hadly pacified Germanian forest. I would have fallen on my sword too !
