the great courses 70% off sale

Recommended Posts

The great courses lecture series have knocked 70% off their (quite high) prices of many dvds for a few days. For instance here is a search list of the keyword ROME, then you can click the sales box to limit it to the ones on sale. Unfortunately their super excellent "Greece and Rome: An Integrated History of the Ancient Mediterranean" isn't now on sale; maybe your library can order that. Of course, also google "thegreatcourses coupons"

I agree that these are some great courses. (I have already bought too many...but I plan on buying more )

I also agree that one should buy these courses ONLY when they come on sale.

With the recession, however, these courses seem to be on sale all the time.

I recommend these course highly!

They sent me a priority code of 63703 for up to 80% off courses this month, and another 20% off orders over $100 at http://www.thegreatcourses.com/nam

If classical history lectures make too stuffy xmas gifts, may I suggest vintage movies from your favorite sources:

Up Pompeii, 1971 zany British comedy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067916/

Caligula, 1979 handbook for orgies, esp in 160 min version http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080491/

They have introduced a new course http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=3810

The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World

Professor Robert Garland, Colgate UniversityPh.D., University College London

including not only Greek but Roman stuff like

23 Being Roman

24 Being a Roman Slave

25 Being a Roman Soldier

26 Being a Roman Woman

27 Being a Poor Roman

28 Being a Rich Roman

29 Being a Roman Celebrity

30 Being a Roman Criminal

31 Relaxing Roman Style

32 Practicing Roman Religion

33 Being Jewish under Roman Rule

34 Being Christian under Roman Rule

As I type it shows a high price, even with 70% reduction. Priority code 62906 may increase it to 75%. Unfortunately I had a 90% one that expired. Maybe have your library order one.

I suppose this will have a lot of utopian victimology whining. Just remember to compare life of the poor in vs out of Roman realm... no worse being inside Rome and at least you have aspirational examples of success to savor.
