Hannibal Smith
Hi, I am hoping that someone will be kind enough to help me. I am trying to do some research for a short story, and I was hoping I could set it during Trajans period as Governor of Germania Superior. However, I have found precious little information. I have purchased a biography called "Trajan Optimus Princeps" by Julian Bennett. This book refers to the years 89-96AD as Trajans lost years. Does anyone know of any sources of information for this period? The main plot in my story involves a Roman Officer who is acting as an escort to a diplomatic envoy tasked to hold negotiations with a Germanic tribe on the other side of the Limes. Negotiations do not go well and the Roman party find themselves behind enemy lines fighting their way back to the Rhine. As I have said I had hoped to set this during Trajans time as Governor of Germania, I suppose that the lack of information could be a bonus as I can make it up, however I would like to ensure that I don't contradict what is known. Bryaxis Hecatee
Have you looked in Pliny the younger's letters ? Their might be mentions. Otherwise maybe in Tacitus ?
Hannibal Smith
Thankyou for your reply. I will look into it. Does anyone know of any other period in romano-germanic relations that I should look into. I'm looking for a period of controlling the germanic tribes through diplomacy rather than out and out war.
