Legionares 25 Years Service

Legionares signed up for 25 years with the Legions,how many of these men would of actually served the full term?Im thinking not many would make it,if the enemy didnt get you, the rigours of campaigning certainly would.Any one got any ideas?

Allso,if a Legionare did serve his full term what type of pension would he receive?

Legionaries served 25-26 years because retiring were once two years. The soldiers had to do savings his salary during the serves. After retirement a legionary could give some money or a lot of land. Distribution of land ceased in 2AD. There were attempts to organize a soldier settles in colonies but such settles were unpopular. The soldiers preferred to return to motherland but free lands weren

He would get a discharge bonus of 3,000 denarii. Or, as Lacertus mentioned, in earlier times he would get a land grant.

Would that land be in Italy?or wherever the legionare came from?or would it be where he was last posted?

The land could be anywhere, often in newly conquered territories such as Africa and Judea or Britain. There could also be a position as a higher governing rank for Centurions, this was all very flexible though!! ;)
