Roman Names

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help me with Roman names? I've always been thrown by the process. I assume it's silmilar to Spanish where like Antonio Bandelero Gonzalez, the middle name is the family name of the father.

An example, Antony's wife, Fulvia, was daughter of Fulvius Flaccus Bambulus. So what would her name be? Her mother was Sempronia. Would that name play into it, too?

Among males it went like this:

First Name

Clan Name

Nickname

Gaius Julius Caesar ....

Gaius= First Name

Julius= Clan Name, of the Julian Clan

Caesar = nickname, Casear means "hairy."

In formal society Roman males were known by the clan name and nickname (e.g. Julius Caesar, The Hairy One of the Julian Clan). Only their closest friends and family would call them by their first name.
