Favourite Mythical Beast / Monster

Recommended Posts

What is your favourite mythical beast / monster? (From Greek or Roman mythology).

Mine is the Minotaur. The intelligence of a man, the savage aspect of a beast.

A close second would be the Talos.

he 'killed' Zeus in round 1 for heaven's sake!!!

Sorry, I don't recall this myth. Would you mind explain how he "killed" Zeus in round one.

Typhon was the storm monster born to Gaia who apparently wanted to spite Zeus for what he did to the Titans. He showed up, started attacking Olympos & everybody (except Zeus & Athena) changed into animals, turned tail and hid in Egypt. Apollo became a hawk (Horus), Artemis a cat (Bastet), Hermes an Ibis (Thoth), etc...

There are many varying accounts of his myth and not all mention his slaying of Zeus, but in the most complete one he does. He stole Zeus' lightning bolts while he wasn't looking and in a sense blew him to bits then hid his ashes and sinues. After that he ravished the earth quite extensively for a while. Then depending on the source, Pan, Cadmus, Hermes etc.. put Zeus back together and in round 2, Zeus of course defeats Typhon and sends him to Tartarus. His 'wife' Echidna escaped the wrath of Zeus and he allowed their offspring to remain alive as challenges to future Heros.

Typhon has a lot in common with Seth.

It is an extremely facinating Myth. It is my belief that it chronicals the severe drought that ravaged Anatolia during the late 4th Millennia BC - early 3rd Millennia BC and caused the diaspora that gave rise many Bronze age civilizations...
