During the early republic, after throwing out the King, Lars Porsena attacked Rome with a huge Etruscan army. Their was a wooden bridge into the city, which had to be destroyed, but the enemy were already their. Horatius and two others defended the bridge against the entire army, while the bridge was destroyed. Right before the bridge fell, Horatius ordered the two others to cross, while he alone stood up to the entire army. After the bridge was gone, he jumped into the Tiber and swam back to safety with all of his armor. Therefore, one man saved the city of Rome. He was a true Roman. Ciro Posted June 7, 2006 Report Share Posted June 7, 2006 u cannot go past caesar skilled orator and politician Probably the greatest general in Roman history but will recieve some stiff competition from the likes of Scipio and Pompey Conquered half the known world in his time second only to Alexander i think but that is quite a jump coz Alexander was a freak of nature the question is not who is a the greatest roman but who was greater Alexander or Caesar???
