Pantagathus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2006 It's evident that the Romans acknowledged the Muses but did they import them wholesale from the Greeks? I'm having trouble finding whether the Romans had their own names for the Muses or just used their Greek names. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Ursus 6 Report post Posted March 15, 2006 There was a temple to "Hercules of the Muses" in Rome. Strange that Hercules would be connected to the Muses ... But that's all I can find. To the extent that the Romans acknowledged the Muses, they seem to be borrowed wholesale from the Greeks. Rome not being an overly artistic society, I don't think anyone outside a small band of Greek-educated literati really cared.

Pantagathus 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2006 Carry on, Cleo! I'm all for it. But the Muse called herself Clio, I think. You know us Americans Andrew, always wanting to spell things our own way... Clio it is!
