Your Magnificence has been misinformed as regards the extent of the Known World:

Here we see that Brittania is a land on the edge of the known world!

What's more, we'll be travelling north of Watford

(I wonder if Viggen will catch the implications of that?)

Good point AD, I had better warn all Provincial members on dress code: "Woad and Trousers not Admitted, smart casual please (and remove all large female lice from hair).Carrying of heads, even as an offering to the Imperator, is not allowed. No Carthaginians admitted "

That might help.

I was wandering if anybody would be tempted to use Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter) as the site of a future forum meet; the place radiates just as much antiquity as Eboricum, and during the summer, when almost half the town's population migrate home, there are plenty of former student dwellings available.

And there's good scrumpy around Exeter. Excellent idea for the future, WW. Count me in.

The 14/15 April dates are now favoured so we can show hospitality to our oversees visitor (Skarr) , who if by misadventure cannot come at that time (Skarr if you are reading this your pm box is full!) may give us leeway to alter the date if.Skarr kindly lets us know his travel plans in advance .

Please note that I suggest this as a "first off" meeting.

Hi Pertinax,

Sorry, I didn't realize my PM was full and have since cleared it. In any case, I don't want everyone's schedules to revolve around me. If August / September is better for most folks, I wouldn't mind that either.

Apr is a long way off and the reason I found this convenient is because of a project I'm working on which would allow me to combine some business with this trip. However, as you know, project deadlines change a lot and nothing is written in stone.

Dont worry Skarr, we must press on with a first meeting .When we have met in the flesh I hope that we (in the UK) will be able to make further productive plans for additional meetings-this first meet is perhaps our "teething" experiment , when personalities, business and academic commitments, travel logistics, areas of interest will take on a more concrete form.

Just to give this thread a bump! We now know that our Beloved and Just Imperator is travelling from Noricum to visit the Colonia of Eboracvm , and the Great Scholar Andrew Dalby travels by palanquin from Narbo , I hope that those of you from Isca to Arbeia and Londinium to Luguvallum will bring suitable trophies (the heads of Silures or Caledonii perhaps ). April 2007 will be here sooner than you think!

Apart from the delivery of learned rhetoric to the assembly , I hope (via the worthy Augustus) to approach this group and invite a senior re-enactor (s) to our meet.

Well, actually from the land of the Pictavi or Pictones. Very close to Rauranum, if anyone can find that on a map of Gallia. Around here, all roads lead to Rom (which is its current name).

The palanquin is currently a Renault Twingo.

Salve fellow Romans

A new poster to this forum I may be but I've followed this thread with great interest and Pertinax has been a member of my own forum, which is new, (http://www.hadrians-wall.info/forumromanum) on my site about Hadrian's Wall for a little while now. While I am looking for new contributors to the forum I am very interested in meeting up with a lot of you in York in April 2007. I've been there before but not to look at Roman stuff unfortunately. So that will be new to me. My wife no doubt will come along as she has a basic interest in Roman archaeology and loves to see these places.

My site initially concentrated on Segedunum (Wallsend) simply because I live so near it (ten minute walk!) but once that set of pages was completed I decided to expand it. Due to other things in life I neglected it for a while and closed down my old forum. I have now resurrected the site and completely modified it and added the forum above So if anyone is interested please take a look. The work I am doing on it expands geographically from east to west and although there are several areas under construction these will be filled up sooner rather than later.

I digress, however. After reading this thread thus far and gleaned the dates do we have a general idea of what is happening re a talk etc? I know Pertinax asked if I could do a talk on Hadrian's Wall but my knowledge is not as vast as he may think!! I may get away with privately asked questions but we'll see. We all start somewhere!! ;)

Im delighted to see his site back online after a longish absence.

Im willing to bet he knows a great deal about the Wall, dont be put off by his modesty.

Hi Pertinax

Thanks for your support. It is appreciated. The latter link takes yu to the 'insides' of the site so to speak for Segedunum whereas the simpler form http://www.hadrians-wall.info takes you to the home page.

I do know a reasonable amount about the Wall but I kid you not on the likes of its technicalities and such so would fail to deliver there I'm afraid. It would rather depend upon the level of knowledge most of you have here as to whether I could justify talking about it. What would I say anyway? I'm sure most folk would know the stuff I do and I would rather listen to other things anyway to broaden my own knowledge. I'm trying to get out of this here!! Seriously, I don't think I know enough yet to stand and deliver a talk but if arms are twisted I may answer a few basic questions. Note the term 'basic'!!!

Now if you asked me about a specific fort like Segedunum I would know quite a bit because of my past involvement there. Anyway.............
