Your Hidden Roman Name

Recommended Posts

Neoflash, you are a member of the Appuleia gens. Though plebeian, your gens is not without distinction, the first of the Appuleii to have obtained the consulship having been Quintus Appuleius Pansa, in 300 BCE.

Your family's branch of the Appuleii, however, was somewhat lacking in ambition, as evidenced by your cognomen of "Privatilo," a diminutive form of a Latin word signifying "a private citizen." For your ancestors had no desire to hold any magisterial office or public position. Perhaps they were wiser than most, in not having thus attracted the attention of envious rivals. And so your family survived through Rome's turbulent years as members of the equestrian order with their wealth intact.

Your praenomen is "Cnaeus," customarily abbreviated as "Cn." Your full Roman name is:

Cn. Appuleius Privatilo

= Philippe Vaillancourt -hl +us

Aventijn, you are the son of Publius Orbius who served as Praetor in 65 BCE, and Governor in Asia in 64 BCE. As such, you bear your father's nomen gentilicium of "Orbius."

Your victory cognomen of "Belgicus" was earned by you on the battlefield, for you fought the ferocious Belgae in the north of Gaul (Gallia Belgica).

Your praenomen is "Tiberius," customarily abbreviated as "Ti." Your full Roman name is:

Ti. Orbius Belgicus

= ujbtobriskislhge -jkh +icu

goodfelladh, you are a member of the Decimia gens, which appears "to have been originally a Samnite family of Bovianum... who, after obtaining the Roman franchise, settled at Rome."

You served Rome well as a soldier, though you didn't see many battles or travel extensively with the army. In fact, you earned your cognomen of "Stativus" (literally meaning "standing; stationary") from the fact that you were stationed at a permanent military encampment for a very long time.

Your praenomen is "Marcus," customarily abbreviated as "M." Your full Roman name is:

M. Decimius Stativus

= etsvdhcaiawdhmtki -ahhkw +iusus

Viking, I don't know how I managed to have missed your posting here! My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. Looking at your scramble, though, I think those are way too many letters to work with. Could you please remove your middle name(s) from the scramble? Thanks -- and welcome to UNRV!

Btw, I see that your posting was #666 in this thread. Coooool. How could I have missed THAT?

Sosigenes, you are a member of the Mallia gens -- a plebeian gens that, despite having been of no celebrity, nevertheless produced a consul in the year 105 BCE (Cn. Mallius Maximus).

Your cognomen is "Remedius," indicating that either you or an ancestor of yours was somewhat adept in the medical profession.

Your praenomen is "Tiberius," customarily abbreviated as "Ti." Your full Roman name is:

Ti. Mallius Remedius

= rekedamiwillstihm -kwh +uus

Viking (like Sosigenes, here), you are a member of the Mallia gens -- a plebeian gens that, despite having been of no celebrity, nevertheless produced a consul in the year 105 BCE (Cn. Mallius Maximus).

Your cognomen is "Beatus," signifying that your branch of the Mallii was blessed by the gods.

Your praenomen is "Titus," customarily abbreviated as "T." Your full Roman name is:

T. Mallius Beatus

= estalmdlwtbuia -dw +us

Or, if you prefer the praenomen of "Decimus" instead of "Titus," you could just as easily be:

D. Mallius Beatus

= estalmdlwtbuia -tw +us

Lupercus, you are a member of the Trebonia gens -- a plebeian gens of considerable antiquity. According to W. Smith, your gens gained distinction as early as 447 BCE, although none of its members obtained the consulship during the Republic.

Your cognomen is "Solator," meaing "consoler; comforter" and suggesting that you or one of your ancestors might have served as the prototypic "professional help" for nervous and confused ancient Romans. (You're not already employed in the mental health field, are you?)

Your praenomen is "Gnaeus," customarily abbreviated as "Cn." Your full Roman name is:

Cn. Trebonius Solator

= estowblrdtnsaorcni -wd +uo

That's awesome, Nephele! This actually fits me well. I do work as admin support for mental health/social workers, although my boss refers to me as a "para-professional" due to my insights about clients/patients during staff meetings. I take on that role for many friends and strangers, though. So, right on!

Is that a C or a G in the first name?

Wow! Anagrams can be revealing! I swear Ursus didn't tell me anything about your work!

The ancient Romans customarily abbreviated the names Gaius and Gnaeus with a "C." This was because originally the Latin alphabet lacked the letter "G." The "G" was added later to the Latin alphabet, but by then the traditional name abbreviations had already been established.
