Oy... Now She's Doing Yiddish Roman Names...

Recommended Posts

L'Shanah Tovah! In honor of Rosh Hashanah, I'll bestow upon anyone who wants 'em, your Yiddish Roman name (from a blanagram of your own name).

You know the drill: Scramble your name with this link

My own Yiddish Roman name is: Pellia Chranea

Cognomen formed from the Yiddish word chrane, meaning "horseradish". My familia owns a prosperous deli in the Subura.

And, because Primus Pilus was so nice to adjust my post count, he gets a Yiddish Roman name without even needing to ask:

Potitus Schnorerus

(Christopher Heaton -aehh +usus)

schnorer: "moocher; freeloader". Potitus Schnorerus has many patrician patrons.

I'll be back later tonight (Noo Yawk time) to do names. B)

Okay, Gaius Octavius, you especially deserve a Yiddish Roman name... Heheh.

You work in the public baths, shlepping towels for Roman patricians who come to the baths more to shmooze than wash.

Aeacus Bederus

klbekac dedera -dkkl +usus

beder: Yiddish for "bathhouse attendant"

Ah, the homeland of many illustrious sons and daughters, not the least of them being Neilus Diamondus! All roads may lead to Rome, but "Brooklyn Roads" leads to fond memories.

****************************************

Honorius, you run a prosperous moving business, for Romans relocating to other areas of the Empire.

Zosius Schlepperus

slarc oehspjo ezolp -ajloo +iusus

schlepper: one who drags around other people's stuff for a living.

****************************************

DecimusCaesar, you are a freedman who was adopted into the Fadius gens, due to a bit of luck and a lot of prayer.

D. Fadianus Davenus

dfadyd niaow nsaev -owy +uus

daven: "to pray".

*****************************************

Potitus Schnorerus, perhaps I should've given you an additional cognomen of "Shnozus". :)

****************************************

Pantagathus, you run a catering business, for patricians who are too cheap to throw an extravagent, Fellini-esque feast, but don't mind spending a few denarii for a little nash.

Seius Nashus

Anes Nsigigh -ggin +usus

-- Nepiana Challa (changed my name because my familia sold the deli and bought a bakery)

I'm free, But what do I know? I know nothing...I don't even know how to write my own name. But I want to know...

Just to quote the movie Spartacus...for a strange reason.

Thanks again Nepallia!!

Gaius Paulinus Maximus, while you're a member of the notable gens of the Aelii, your particular branch happens to comprise the black sheep of the familia.

Aelius Ganefus

ganef: either a thief or a prankster.

My dearest Nepiana,

I'll try to enure that the congers are of impugnable caliber and the wines are best mulsums to be found...

My familia's bakery will supply the fancy breads. "True Roman challa, for true Romans!" (To paraphrase an oft-heard forum advertisement in HBO's Rome.)

Sounds like a line Tevyeus might have spoken, in that old Roman musical: Kitharist on the Roof.
