A Survey Book On Time Between Nerva And Aurelius

Recommended Posts

Im trying to look for one that survey's that particular era, but all I can find are rather expensive single bipgraphies.

Also Im talking about second hand sources(I have Augustan History)

So far the only survey I have read of that piece of history is from AHM Jones Later Roman Empire. Which was about a 30 page one.

As starter why not go right after Nero to the year of the four emperors?

Gerrmanicus did a nice review of it!

...and of course Suetonius covers Caesar till Domitian. That should keep you busy...

cheers

viggen

...almost forgot, this book covers your time period pretty well,

Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire : From the First Century A.D. to the Third

I've read both the accounts of Suetonius and the year of four emperors by Gwyn and Tacitus accounts of his Histories.

Thats why I wanted to move onto post-Dominitian days.

The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire sounds very good.

However the scope is much larger(extending to the 3rd century crisis and begining with the Julio-Claudians. Which means the focus will diminish.

Neverthless, thanks a lot. I will be ordering this. But I guess deeper studies on the era will be done through more indirect methods

Oh and I just saw my spelling error. I meant Nerva not Nera.... lol :(

Not quite what you are looking for, but it's the best thing I could think of. It's a good book in its own right.

So far the only accounts I have had of the "5 good emperors" are through various tid bits here or there in different books, so my knowledge is rather weak. So I was wondering if there was any sort of general survey of that period. I have Michael Grants "The Antonines" which acts in such a way(though its a very short one) for the period directly following the one I am looking for(starts with Antoninus Pius).

Nera, lol i also thought you meant Nero, hehe

Interesting enough, there is, as far as i am aware of, no book out there that captures the period of the "5 good emperors" in one volume...

Here two more books that cover some of your prefered timeframe....

The Roman World 44 BC-AD 180

Roman Society from Nero to Marcus Aurelius

Roman society from Nero to Marcus Aurelius sounds very good.

Thankfully however, I managed to find just what i was looking for:

The Roman empire of the second century, or, The age of the Antonines (Epochs of ancient history) (Epochs of ancient history) (Unknown Binding)

Only one more copy available used. So far this is all I was able to find.
