They were given responsibilities for the public games after in was taken from the aediles under Augustus, they did have to serve as Proconsuls in senatorial provinces, while the ex-consuls were made Legate Propraetor for the imperial provinces. Praetors in the republic could field an army in a emergency when the consuls were away from Rome. So it sounds like to me they where in fact second to the consuls. Also they could appoint a iudex in a civil case, and in criminal cases they appointed judges that acted as jurors that voted for the guilt or innocence of those on trial. I don't claim to be a Professor of the Classics, i like most people on here am trying to learn and ask questions on the Roman civilization.
