Hi all

I don't wish to appear to set the agenda for a second meet so I will leave venues in the capable hands of Pertinax. It seems we are yet to choose between the Wall and any southern venue. I would not wish anyone to choose one over another when both may be set for September or so. I would be unlikely personally to be able to attend a southern meet this year though at this stage although this may change.

Anyway, should we now discuss venues in earnest? Over to Pertinax.....

This is no problem, I think we are at cross purposes.

My suggestions:

1.AC and NN to co-ordinate a definite "Northern" meet centred on the Wall (Autumn).

2.Meantime we discuss location(s) of a "Southern Meet " at a different date for those who cannot travel to the icey North.

3.Suggestions for planning ahead for UK Forum meet as an "annual" event , be it York or possibly Bath /Chester

4.any other met suggestions possibly co-ordinated with re-enactment or inviting re-enactment representatives to be our guests (depending on era of specialisation).

Please feel free to pm me on this topic. Please post your thoughts also.

And so for the rest of you eager Romanophiles... 'are you free?'

No, Hadrian's Wall is too far away.

WW do you wish to suggest a "Southern" itinerary? Maiden Castle etcetera etcetera?

I don't think I can manage the Wall this year, much as I would like to. However, very likely I could get to a southern destination.

As someone already said above, it could be a very good idea to invite Sally Grainger. She knows more than anyone else I can think of about the real practical aspects of reconstructing Roman food.

Based on what people are saying, and that York was pretty far north anyway for a number of people, perhaps we should go south for the September meet? I have no problem with that, and dont mind picking up one or two people en route.

Very well, I will undertake the invitation. We will therefore need to be accommodating ( in terms of appropraite dates) if we have a "star" guest . Though I would of course extend that billing to AD as well.

I'm afraid I would not be able to get to an annual meet anywhere near Bath as it is very difficult to get to for us. York seemed ideal. Or maybe just further south of that so wherever it may be it is in the middle for everyone.

If the Wall is not for September I would need to alter other schedules to get further south and I cannot see it being so at this stage. Travel costs may also be a problem.

Sally Grainger was mentioned by myself Andrew. As you'll know she is an excellent choice. She is extremely skilled at what she does and makes things very interesting. I like her choice of ingredients for her Roman bread!! Have you ever tasted it? No matter where the meet Sally is sure to be a superb choice of 'star' guest.

I will sit out this choice process until something definite is chosen as I do not want to influence anyone just because I may not make it down south or until a definite number can go to the Wall either/or...

Personally I would be keen on the suggested September meet on the Wall , and am happy with York as our "base camp" generally.

I'm willing to travel either north or south, as I'm pretty centrally located it doesn't really make any difference to me, although I must say that the re-enactment team suggested by AC that's doing the march on Hadrian's Wall on the 29th sept. does sound pretty appealing.

I'm easy which ever way we do it, as long as we get a north/south meet in this year, as for the annual meet, York or Chester are both great cities for a get together.

There are these two choices of...

The Ermine Street Guard who are at Arbeia and Segedunum on September 1st and 2nd. Unfortunately I cannot do those dates!! The earliest I can organise this meet for would be subsequent weekends thereafter, the 8th and 9th. That said they are not booked after those dates.

However, Comitatus are marching on Hadrians Wall on September 29th and 30th. Hows this for a choice weekend?

http://www.comitatus.net/events.htm

I have seen this group before and they are very good. Check out their pages.

Unfortunately their site gives no finer detail of this walk on the Wall so I have contacted them to see what is on their schedule. If anyone wishes to pick those dates we can 'bump into them' and offer resistence to their 'invasion'!!

How's this for you NN? Are those dates free?

And so for the rest of you eager Romanophiles... 'are you free?'

After various consultations we are moving toward the suggestion mentioned above: 28th to 30th September on the "scenic" central section of the Wall .We will have the opportunity to take in a re-enactment by Late Period Re enactors , and to devise "wet" and "sunny" alternative itineraries . The possible major visited locations are Corstopitum, Vircovicivm and Vindolanda , also Procolitta, Aesica and Banna. Thats quite a selection of sites and museums. If possible I would hope to make direct contact with Comitatus so we can have some time especially devoted to Late Period arms/technology.This is just to get the dates into some sort of focus.More to follow.AC will have plenty to say im sure . I thinkwe will be looking to have a considerable focus on the "built environment" at this meeting.

All these prospective dates and places are fine for me. I can pick more southerly based people up at Lancaster to cut down on railfares.

As my PC is now entering a semi-comatose state and has developed Cheyne-Stokes breathing, I am just posting to add my vote to what has been mentioned above. Dates and itinerary fine for me.

Keep your fingers crossed for my PC in the meantime. Perhaps Nephele could sing it a charm to stop it surrendering to the death sleep..... Help!!

Well, it seems that these dates are settled then. After a chat with Pertinax it seems myself and Northern Neil will organise this event and the dates for a more settled approach would be Friday 28th to Sunday 30th September. I say this to allow long distance travellers the chance to get there so a bright early start can be made on the Saturday morning. There are several forts and museums to visit and maybe not all will be perused at this one meet. Anyone who still wants to travel on Saturday can of course do so but must really set out early in order to catch up. The Wall in terms of length was originally to be 76 Roman miles (just over 70 British miles). Of course the extension to Segedunum was to make it 80 Roman miles (approximately 73 British miles).

The length of the stretches we may cover at this stage can run up to 35 miles or so at a rough guess. This will be refined but it gives a sense of perspective early on as to the distances we may yet cover. NN can take one or two people in his van and Pertinax may have room in his car. So anyone who can bring a car and has room for a few more will be worshipped like Gods!! My wife and I usually travel via the Hadrian's Wal Bus but this won't be an option so we would be relying on someone to help us out. The AD122 service has been dramatically changed too so it is even harder to travel their via this one service. Having said that, don't let it put you off as there are other ways to get there. Trains to Hexham and transport by one of our kind drivers will surely see us through.

Accommodation is plentiful along the Wall although I cannot personally recommend anywhere as yet because I have not used them. I will dig around the sites and post any interesting ones I find here. I will not post those that are deemed too expensive. We will need our monies for souvenirs and plenty beer etc!!

So, let's get going on this now and let us all know if you are definately coming or not. Those dates are now fixed as of today. Friday 28th (if you want to be there ready for an early start on Saturday) to Sunday 30th. You can arrive and leave at will of course. That's not written in stone. A good night in a local on Friday to get us going as it did in York sounds like a good start point!! Only trouble is there are no curry houses nearby so bring a carry out!!!!!

I have emailed Comitatus and Pertinax has stated he may do the same. I have not had a reply as yet though it is still early doors. I have tried to get Hadiran too but he's busy on another frontier. Emperors ay??
