The 'milling' on the edges of coins is meant to prevent this. In the past, gold coins were 'sweated', i.e., bounced up and down in a leather pouch and the gold flicks collected while the coin was returned to circulation. But in this case I can't understand why ancient monneyers didn't do the same things with silver or gold coins. I think gold is a perfect candidate to be cut off from the coins.
