Coin of Vercingetorix?

Recommended Posts

Hi all -

I have recently seen what appears to be a Gallic coin showing Vercingetorix of the Arveni. It is not the well known gold stater nor is it the Roman silver coin showing his skinny profile.

Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of the coin.

It appears to be some sort of modern commemorative coin of bronze as it shows on its obverse Vercingetorix in 3/4 face with flowing hair and mustache almost identical to the face of Aim

Is it the stater in the Greek style? http://www.romancoins.info/VIC-Historical1.html#gallia (3rd picture down). France issued a commemorative silver reproduction of this coin in 1975 it seems.

No. It is not the gold stater shown nor the silver coin with Vercingetorix's famous profile.

My apologies, but without a picture it's beyond my ability to identify. You may want to try the folks at Forum Ancient Coins

Hi, I was browsing internet for this exact information. I think I have the coin you describe. It has a rooster on the reverse with the word Gallia around it, then a circle of dots and the word Vercingetorix around that circle. There is also a sickle and an oak leaf. The "coin" seems to have been made of two separate sides.

I inherited this medallion from my grandmother who found it - some 60-70 yeas ago at least, in Warsaw, Poland. It has a little hook and I used to wear it as a necklace.

I agree with your comment about the similarity to the 1865 monument erected by Napoleon.

Any more information would be greatly appreciated!

I like the description of the coin from a previous auction:

The head on the obverse of this coin has long been identified as that of Vercingetorix, the powerful chieftain of the Arverni and great foe of Caesar
