"Military Channel - 9:00 am

Next showing: The Claw Greek genius Archimedes creates a secret weapon that plucks Roman warships from the sea." (From the G-Man)

Considering the weight of a warship, or any ship for the matter, was it really possible for the claw to lift a ship out of the water?

Apparently so. I saw this documentary a while back, they attempted to re create the claw and then prove that it worked, it was like a kind of crane with a grappling hook on the end that would drop down onto the deck of the ship then lift it up out of the water and then drop it, they reckoned that this would be enough to capsize the ship.

take a look HERE.

That claw seems rather pointless to me. it has to be operated from the shore, which makes it only useful to prevent an enemy landing, and the enemy could easily land somewhere else, and then assualt the thing on foot. seriously, this thing is ridiculous.
