LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

I was and is a huge fan of this man. When I heard the news I was sad. He is one if the not the greatest comedian of all time. My favorite show of Carlin of all time was is 1992. "That's another complaint of mine, too much use of this prefix pre.... It's all over the language now. pre this, pre that..... place the turkey in a preheated oven.... it's ridiculous... there are only two states an oven can possibly exist in, heated or unheated.... preheated is a meaningless f***ing term... that's like pre-recorded, this program was pre-recorded, well of course it was pre-recorded, when else you gonna record it, afterwards? Mr. Carlin was a comic genius. If you liked his appearances in the 'Bill and Ted' movies, check out his abolutely freakin'

hilarious turn in the 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' movie. Classic Carlin. Taking the piss out of himself and us all at

the same time. His tapes (yes, I'm old!) got me through a whole lot of hard times.

RIP, George.
