Dura-Europos was a Roman fortress city in Mesopotamia until it was captured and destroyed by the Sassanians after a brutal siege in 256-257 AD. Although the events are poorly documented, the battle involved Sassanian forces using tunnels to enter behind the Roman defenses. In response, the Romans also dug tunnels to counter this threat, but their efforts ultimately failed.
