How was the shield gripped?

 

Best explained by Herodotus & AD Godley's notes from the same:

 

"Until then (the Carian's invention of grips) all who used shields carried them without these grips, and guided them with leather belts which they slung round the neck and over the left shoulder."

Suspended (by the leather straps/thong, etc..) , not held.

 

I agree that considering the amount of hand eye coordination it would seem to need to protect oneself using this system, it's hard to picture it but what I've offered in regards to explaination is all I've got... ;)
