How was the shield gripped?

It seems that they were nothing more than a bunch of marauders. (Like everyone else, I guess.)

I guess that I must be as thick as a plank, but I still don't get how the shield was held.

Suspended (by the leather straps/thong, etc..) , not held.

 

I agree that considering the amount of hand eye coordination it would seem to need to protect oneself using this system, it's hard to picture it but what I've offered in regards to explaination is all I've got...
