    This event begins 08/23/2005 and repeats every year until 08/24/2018


    The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius on August 24, AD 79, (during the reign of Titus) destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Though perhaps as many as 5,000 lives were lost, as well as incalculable economic and environmental damage, the volcanic ash provided archaeology with an invaluable and nearly perfectly preserved ancient city with which to study.
