Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39 CE - 65 CE), one of Rome's greatest poets, born in the city which is today known as Cordoba (or Cordova) in southern Spain. His works include the Pharsalia (an epic poem about the Civil War between Caesar and Pompey, in which Lucan's admiration of Cato's stoicism is evident). Lucan chose death by suicide after having been implicated in a conspiracy to overthrow the Emperor Nero.
