   A fertility festival. Priests would gather at the Lupercal, the cave where the she-wolf suckled the divine twins Romulus and Remus. A goat was sacrificed, and the blood of the goat smeared on the foreheads of the yong men gathered. The goat was skinned into strips and tied around the waists of the young men. The young men ran about the streets striking everyone they met with goatskin thongs. Women struck in such a manner were deemed blessed with fertility.
