  1. Maybe I should start a new thread for this one, but it's slightly related, so "what the hey!"

Here in the sleepy little village of Aquis-of-the-Romans, we have a photo competition each year. There are prizes for the top three entires, but the top 12 get included in the village calendar for the following year as the main page photo of the month.

As an idea, UNRV contributors could take photos with a Roman theme and submit them, we could get the Triumverate to choose their top 12, and get someone notable to choose their top 3 for prizes.

The 2012 calendars could then be sold in the same way as the Wallmaps.

Just a thought. What does anyone think?

I think it's a great idea, an official UNRV calendar would not only be good to own but would also be a great gift for someone too.

I do remember it been suggested a few years ago but we have a lot of new members since then so maybe the idae will take off this time.

  2. The list really is endless, there's just so much to see and do but if it's your first time then i'd start with the big hitters first, the Forum ,Palatine hill, Pantheon, colloseum etc. Then you can expand to the lesser known sites. just make sure you get your self a really good guide book and you should be ok.

But what ever you do don't rush!!! Take your time and savour the beauty of every place you visit instead of trying to cram it all in!!

    And most of all........ENJOY!!!!

  3. Just a bit more info that may be of use, from the ever reliable Wikipedia

An ergastulum (plural: ergastula) was a Roman building used to hold in chains dangerous slaves , or to punish other slaves. The ergastulum was usually subsurface, built as a deep, roofed pit - large enough to allow the slaves to work within it and containing narrow spaces in which they slept. They were common structures on all slave-using farms (latifundium). The etymology is disputed between two possible Greek roots 'ergasterios' (workshop) and 'ergastylos' (pillar to which slaves were tethered).

The ergastulum was made illegal during the reign of Hadrian.

The term is also used to describe any small Roman prison.

  4. Nice review GhostofClayton,

I've had the Breeze and Dobson book for a good few years now, it's such an excellent book on the wall that I've never felt the need to buy another book on the subject that is so thoroughly covered in that B &D's book. But I like the sound of the book you reviewed so I'll keep my eye's open for it.

    Cheers.

  5. The Rajput warrior had some serious weaponry going on though!! Must have been a pretty formidable opponent! Plus apparently the Roman Centurion regularly fought with a pick axe??????

The latest installment of this show pits the Somali Pirates against the Medellin Cartel !!!!...........Genius!

  6. Its probably Hadrian's Wall for me, I come into contact with the Wall quite a lot due to my regular ventures to Scotland and back and when ever I've got a bit of spare time I'll make a little detour to the site of any remains and just have a little wander about for half hour or so.

It's good to get a little Roman fix to break up the day!!:)

  7. Great post Centurion Valerius, very interesting article, I wonder if Gaius Appuleius Diocles was as big a celebrity as our own David Beckham??

I can just see him posing in a loin cloth with his current squeeze draped across him in the ancient Roman celebrity mag ....Salve!... :D

It also ties in nicely with the book I'm currently reading, The Legates Daughter by Wallace Breem, where the main protagonists is the son of the most famous charioteer in Rome.

  8. If you're taking it that seriously, you're rather missing the point.

Gotta agree with you Russ. This show should not be taken seriously, at the endof the day it's just a bit of fun, entertainment based on ancient warfare, that is it! Laugh at it and enjoy it!

It is on Bravo after all!!

  9. I think there is something not quite right in the the Giveaway forum. I just looked there and unless my home PC is acting up everything seems to have a 'last post' date and time of today at 10:07AM.

I haven't noticed this problem with any other forum so far.

The same thing has happened in the Imperium Romanurum forum. All the posts are dated "yesterday at 10:39"

Infat after a second look around, all the forums seem to be doing the same thing, every posts is dated the same as the last entry??

  10. I wouldn't mind having a chat with crazy old "Little Boots" just to see if he really was mad as a box of frogs, or just had a really wicked sense of humour??

Who knows maybe he'd even let me have a trot around on Incitatus? Riding around the forum on the back of a Consul, now that would be fun wouldn't it!!!

  11.

Love the cover picture and I am sure I will enjoy the book. I did Belisarius.

Have you read the Belisarius book by Lord Mahon??

There aren't many books around about this great Roman, Mahon's book was written in the 1800's so is obviously quite old fashioned in its reading but still very good, although it does rely heavily on Procopius where as Ian's book gives us a much wider insight into the life of Belisarius.

Both are excellent books, although Ian's in probably the better and more entertaining of the two, Lord Mahon's is still worth reading.

  12. I ordered the book earlier this week from Amazon, it should be here anyday.

Hopefully it will be gold plated too! Well it should be after how much I paid for it!!!! ;)
