  1. So your question is how does the modern practice of astrology differ from those of ancient Rome? My initial search brought up many articles discussing the relationship between astrology and Roman politics. Apparently astrologers were expelled from Rome several times. Astrology in Roman Law and Politics by Frederick Cramer in 1954 seems to be a well-respected work on the subject. I would imagine it is very dry and scholarly but it might be a good read and answer some of your questions. A History of Western Astrology Volume I: The Ancient and Classical Worlds by Nicholas Campion is available at Amazon.com and looks like it might answer some of your questions. Volume II covers "The Medieval and Modern Worlds". The following is a short excerpt from a long encyclopedia article which lists some sources that may help answer your question. I believe Pliny is freely available online, so you might want to look at that. http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Plin.+Nat.+toc&redirect=true
  2. Is the first date of the OP Caldrail's exact B-Day?
  3. I read in articles that UNRV orginally started as some MMO game years before when it was launched. However the game had to shut down from what I last read about it and the site gradually evolved into a Roman History Forum that it is today. Is there anyone from the old days still logging in long after the original game ended? I'm very curious about what the game was like-I never got interested in Roman History until Jr. Year back in HS and by the time I discovered this site, it had been at least 2-3 years since it became the site it is now. What was the game like? Was it any fun?
  4. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/06/110623-ancient-rome-human-waste-herculaneum-science-diet-excrement-italy/ Old news, but I thought this was an interesting (but nasty) thing I found on the web.
  5. We already gone over Sun Signs so its time to go over the two next (important aspects of Astrology:The Moon Sign and Rising Sign. We all know our sun signs but very few people know their Moon and Rising Signs. The Sun Sign while one of the most important aspect of a person's chart, is often overrated in importance by Newspaper Daily Horoscopes. Then there is the Moon Sign. The Moon Sign represents your inner self and emotions and your subconscious. It is the side that most people except those very close to you don't see.The Moon Sign is just as important, if not more important, than your Sun Sign in determining your Astrology Chart and your personality. Th Moon Sign changes every 2 and a half day. Your Rising Sign is your Mask to the world, your exterior side.Basically it is the side of you that you show in public. The Rising Sign is also the one sign that determines your appearance the most. While it affects your personality, it doesn't really ingrain traits in you and is more like a mask. The exception to the rule is the Scorpio Rising which is the most powerful Rising Sign and is famed for Dominating the Whole Chart. It actually ingrains Scorpionic traits as part of your general personality and its not uncommon for people with Scorpio Rising to have a more Scorpionic personality and general nature than actual Scorpios without other Scorpio placements in their charts. The Rising Sign is often considered by many Astrologers as the most important Sign in your chart because it affects your 12 Houses(which will be discussed for another time). The Rising Sign changes about every 2 hours. Also the Rising Sign is the one aspect of the chart that affects your appearance the most. You are more likely to match the physical stereotype of a typical sign if your Rising Sign is in it than your actual Sun Sign's stereotypes.Of course genetics affects too but the Rising Sign would make you more likely to look something that your family member don't resemble. In addition the Rising Sign also affect your physical health and strength. I'm a stereotypical Scorpio in appearance. I have dark skin and hair (I'm the darkest in my family) and I have lots of stamina and physical strength for someone who's not athletic (and will continue to increase this blessed constitution as I I continue to whip myself into athletic shape). The Sun Signs and Moon Signs do affect your appearance and health too but the the Rising Sign that does the most effect unless you have Moon placements know to have powerful affects on appearance such as Moon in Leo which gives you such good looks that make you the favorite of the opposite sex and possible a move-star like glamour. I may not be good-looking as of now but most girls I showed my pic to online thought I was quite good-looking for someone who was a nerdy waste and fat (both which are now disappearing gradually). To find your Rising Sign you'll need your time of birth-it has to be as precise as possible for full results. To find your mean sign, while a precise time helps bring more details, all you really need is to know whether you born AM or PM. Just to add-how high the degrees of your Sun,Moon, and Rising Signs also effects how strong of an effect those placements have on your personality and how close you are to matching the stereotypes of the specific signs those placements are in. My Moon Sign is in Leo at 25
  6. One thing I keep hearing from anti-religious people-particularly those whoa re attacking the Roman Catholic Church-is that all 3 of the Abrahamic Religions (Islam, Judaism, and last but not least Christianity-esp Catholicism) created long periods of religious intolerance and Holy Wars throughout history. They often make it out that the Pagan Religions that existed before the Warriors of the Abarahamic Faiths went out to proselytize others were far more open and tolerant as well as much more peaceful than any of the three faiths. This attack is most especially used against eh Roman Catholic Church. In fact I once chatted with a ****-religion hating Atheist who bashed the Catholic Faith for its long history of religious persecution and suppression of intellectualism. He actually stated that the various pre-Christian faiths that existed in Europe such as the Roman Polytheistic Religions and the Celtic Religion actually endorsed "Freedom of Religion" to the point they openly welcomed any followers of other faiths to stay in the same region and that followers of such religions were actually far more peaceful people who never wanted to impose their religious beliefs and others and didn't have any concept of "Holy Wars". This same guy attacked the Roman Catholic Church for waging their Crusades on these "Peace-loving" peoples and he sided with these pagans, literally vouching that they only fought in self-defense. In addition he actually went as far as saying that these Paganic Religions encouraged far more free-thinking and actually had "far more sophisticated sciences and intellectual arts such as Philosophy" than the Catholic Church ever had in its history up until near the end of the Medieval Period and the start of the Renaissance. He attacks the two other Abrahamic Religion, Judaism and Islam, for very much the same reasons. What do you think? Were Pagan Cults and Religions as peace-loving and tolerant "defenders of Religious Freedoms" as many religion-hating people make them out to be? Are their attacks on the three Abarahamic Faiths-especially on the Catholic Church-actually justified or exaggerated? Furthermore were these Pagan People actually firm supporters of "Free-thinking" and actually had more sophisticated arts and sciences than the Catholic Faiths as many Anti-Catholic Irreligious people make them out to be?
  7. When my World History professor was going over China, as soon as we reached the Warring States Period he began to talk about the codification and widespread acceptance of Confucianism and Taoism. His comment went like this: "The Warring States period was a time of instability and violence. As happens throughout history, during tough times people turn to religion as a thing to fall back on. And it was in this period that the philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism began to gain wide scale acceptance and organized into powerful institutions in Chinese culture."-My paraphrase. He does state that Confucianism and Daoism aren't actually religions in the traditional sense but they gave a guide way for the people of the Warring States Period to live their lives just religions did and continue to do so in this modern age. So while they aren't technically religions, my professor stated they were something the Chinese people fell back on in this chaotic period for comfort and to survive the constant warfare and thus had an effect similar to religion. Is this claim about having religion to fall back on in times of hardships true for other periods of history for other peoples who followed other religions?Could any put good examples?
  8. Tomorrow begins my Scorpio Rising Transformation!

  9. I took a specific interest in Greek Mythology recently and learned a number of obscure Greek Gods and Goddesses. Among them was Adonis. In fact my current account's username is a nod to this Greek character who was the God of Love and Desire and he was significant for being one of the lovers of Aphrodite From what I can find for much of Ancient times Adonis was worshiped by a number of Mystery Religions and it was not until Imperial Rome that any written source mention women were consoled by a revived Adonis. Could anyone grant me more info on the Roman version of this minor Greek God beyond what Wikipedia grants?
  10. I'm going to be writing a bunch of Articles on the History of Astrology and in the future I hope to write a book on the History of Astrology and get it published. So I need help;can anyone here give academic recommendations on books specifically on Roman Astrology?
  11. It depends on the Astrology System you're using. In Sidereel Astrology, yes the dates have changed. However in the Tropical System (which is the system most Astrologers used and the very run that Newspapers have daily forecasts on), the dates remain the same. So if you were a Cancer before you'd remain aCancer today according to the Tropical System. Regardless,I'm a Pisces in both the Sidereel and Tropical Systems . Also there is more than Sun Signs, there is also the Moona nd Rising Signs but I'll save that for another topic.
  12. I already know that the Roman system uses the same signs as the modern tropical system and the Greek,Arabic,Vedic, and Persian systems. But I am curious what made the Roman system of Astrology unique from other similar systems in various cultures esp. the Tropical System? Stuff on Roman Astrology seem scarce on the web as do stuff on other ancient Astrology System.
  13. Hello, I'm a serious Astrologer. There's a lot more to Astrology than mere "Sun Sign" but I'll save that for another time. FYI Sun Sign is your general Sign which is based on your date of birth. As my username shows I'm a 26 Degrees Pisces with a Moon in Leo and Scorpio Rising -lets leave the Moon and Rising Sign out of this thread and save it for another one as those two aspects can be very complex. I just stated my Moon and Rising Signs here because thats just how serious I gotten into Astrology that I feel empty just mentioning my Sun Sign and I'm used to people stating their own Moon and Rising Sign as I lurk in many Astrology sites as well as post in several sites.
  14. Back on Monday when I was in US History class my professor was just going over World War 1. She made a comment that went like this: "The Roman short sword killed more people in history than any other weapon. However that took centuries. In World War 1 the weapons introduced killed millions in just 4 years". What do you think of this claim?
  15. No need to worry about the claims the Zodiac Calendar is wrong. Its a complex issue but lets just say they are only looking at the positions of the sky-in when they say there is a "13th" sign. In actuality its not the positions in the sky and the Sun passing through them, but the Equinox that matters and it remains in the same 12 signs-thats why most Astrologers didn't change the Zodiac Signs to include Ophiuchus .Its complex (especially the Equinox position thing) but these articles should clear up come things. http://www.dailyhoroscope.com/horoscope-headlines/ophiuchus-the-13th-zodiac-sign http://www.astro.com/astrology/in_ophiuchus_e.htm No need to worry, you're still a Leo. Oh BTW whats the other aspects of your basic chart (gonna start a thread on this soon >W<!)? My basic chart? I'm a Pisces with a Moon in Leo and Scorpio Rising . EDIT Another article to clear up the misconception of changed Sign dates and the "new" Zodiac Sign "Ophiuchus". http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/01/13/no-your-zodiac-sign-hasnt-changed/ Also on the claim the birthdate changes because the position of constellations in the skies has changed recently. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/blog-post/2011/01/new_zodiac_sign_dates_dont_swi.html Read this and the other article above. It should clear up this misconception thats been spreading very lately since 2010.
