  1. You know, I was actually thinking about writing up some basic Latin lessons to post on this very site. I took a quick look through the link AofS posted, and I think whoever did that made things more complicated than they have to be. Would anyone be interested in such a thing?

  2. skiman305, you belong to the Maecilia gens, which gave birth to the noble Sp. Maecilius who served four terms as a Tribune of the Plebs in the 5th century B.C.E. Another noble ancestor of your gens was T. Maecilius Croto, a Lieutenant Legate who was entrusted by Ap. Claudius to receive the soldiers who survived Cannae and lead them to Sicily (Liv. 23.31.6).

    Your cognomen is Trachalus, which may be derived from the name of the ancient town of Trachas (located southeast of Rome near the Pomptine Marshes), suggesting that your family's branch of the Maecilii may have come from that town.

    Your praenomen is Publius, abbreviated as "P." and your full Roman name is:

    P. Maecilius Trachalus

    Ah, very cool, thanks so much. With all this mixing and matching of random letters into names, I bet you'd be killer at Boggle.

  3. can any please tell me the latin words for live free , die well

    thanks in advance

    I'm not well-versed in English->Latin translation, but I'll have a go:

    vive libere obique recte

    I assumed the sense of free was "freely," and that by "well" you meant "in a correct manner," rather than "in a pleasant way." Hope that's what you were going for.

  4. Got the PM, thanks for being so welcoming. Let's see what you can do with these:

    First and last only: wkahlsrptaci

    First, middle and last: whialimcekrtplshaca

    Thanks in advance

    P.S.: I am of the male persuasion

  5. Hello all,

    I know I came to the right place to shore up on my Roman history knowledge when I saw the newest member thinks Latin as a second language should be mandatory. If that's any indication, I'm sure I'll like this place a lot. I'm currently an undergrad classics major, so I hope this will become a good resource for me in the future. A couple of years I think and I'll be good enough to start contributing.
