Else
I have been an avid reader of this site for the last couple of weeks. I was interested in the question about the Roman emblem. Please can anyone tell me what does it stand for and where it originated from. Also does anyone think that it originally existed in the form of tatoos. Primus Pilus
Senatus Populusque Romanus.... The Senate and the People of Rome SPQR has its roots all the way back to the Etruscans (Populus being an Etruscan word) and its origin seems to have been mainly military. The slogan adorned military banners originally, and eventually came to be included on various public buildings.
Ursus
Whatever its origin it soon became the theorum of Republican government. The Senate and the People, as opposed to the rule of the king. Romans hated kings, following their experience and susbequent overthrow of the Etruscan monarchies. They preferred an oligarchy of political elites tempered by public elections. I don't see any connection with tatoos.
Else
Thanks for that, but would it be just Imperial buildings that this was shown on or would every building belonging to a senior Roman official have it on.
