I know the topic is actually another one, but I still believe that in most cases one would prefer to go by ship from Ostia to southern Gaul rather then climb the Alps. I do wonder if the towns indicated by more complex designs on the various leaves of the map may provide a visual clue as to how large or at least how important the ancient cartographers considered them to be even if their possible use as an indication of 'status' may be more problematical. Unless there was a good reason, I think automatically any Roman considering going to Britain would take the boat from Ostia to (at that time) somewhere like Nice, and then move north through Gaul. If desperate to go by land, I think the kindest route would cross the Maritime Alps (possibly as far as Arles/Arelate) using the Via Julia Augusta.
