Amateur archaeologists excavate Roman fort

A group of amateur archaeologists has been breaking new ground on a former Roman fort in Cumbria. The Lunesdale archaeology group has been digging at Low Borrowbridge Farm, next to the M6 in the Tebay gorge. So far they have found walls, the remains of an ancient central heating system and a giant arrowhead from a artillery ballista...

Just to place this on the map for anyone curious.

With luck this is a link to an area close to the site.

 

If you scroll down the map until you are just south of where the Borrow Beck joins with the Lune and switch to 'Bird's eye' view the fort lies just to the south of the minor road which crosses east/west over the motorway and then turns south. In the field between the farm buildings and the minor road if you zoom in close you should be able to make out the fort and notably the line of the ditch defences on its western side.

This fort is very visible from the motorway (M6). It is about half an hours drive from my house, and in the early 80's I was lucky enough to do a 'field walk' of the site with the Lancaster Archaeological society. We didn;t turn up many finds, though!
