I don't know for sure, but my best guess would be that the Iphicrates did not have metal hobnails of the Roman soldiers (I think that's what you call them?) They just increased the lifetime of the leather sandal by absorbing much of the wear and tear. Valens Posted December 31, 2005 Report Share Posted December 31, 2005 The glaring difference would be that the Roman Caliga was a sandal, being made and fastened by straps, whereas the Iphicratids were more similar to a boot, enclosing the foot and lower shin except for the toes.
