Don't forget Israel. They were third on the list, if I remember correctly.

Italy never was in the front line of the Cold War. I'm not sure if they had good reasons to rebuild their military after WW II. Their military is probably fine on domestic defense and small-scale operations. But for a large task force?

Just an assumption of course.

As a side note, I happened to be in San Diego this past week and witnessed the first homeporting of the US Navy's newest aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan. I read in the program from the ceremony that the U.S. Navy has the same number of aircraft carriers as all other world navies combined and each of the US carriers are larger/more capable than any of the foreign makes & models.

Yes, but they might be obsolete in a generation. Sattelite guided rockets can make swiss cheese of large aircraft carriers. If the US Navy doesn't find some defense against it, it will have to rethink its entire carrier based strategy.

It might be true that the carriers will become obsolete, but I am sure we will continue to build them -- it brings lots of jobs to lots of Congressional districts when you build a carrier.

  • 1 year later...
I know their military was sub par in the Second World War

Their navy and regular army sucked, but their special forces are in my opinion the best that ever exsisted; their R&D was highly inventive, and their SF were quite receptive to the advances. This accomplishment is overlooked today, though It's now being trumped by a much slower and more ambitious (in magnitude{though, in my opinion, less daring, and more expensive, and time consuming}) force transformation. You got Strykers and on the horizon, Digitalized networking for the individual soldier on the battlefield. They had specialized parachutes, amphibious assualt ships with mobile shields mounted on them so you wouldn't get shot once exiting the ship (something I'm sure a couple of guys at V-Day were thinking about as thier ships neared shore), ect.
