LEGIO SECVNDA AVGVSTA

Recommended Posts

This is a genuine list of soldiers who served in the Second Augustan Legion, it lists each soldier in ascending order of precedence to the legion and gives a brief history of their lives.

I think it's fascinating that we still have records of men who lived and died in the Roman Army thousands of years ago.

Here's a look at one particular soldier

SIGNIFER - G Valerius Victor - This man came from Lyon, where he and his father Caius were part of the Galerian voting tribe, and died at Caerleon aged 45 after 17 years of service. His tombstone, found on the banks of the river Usk near a rectangular tomb, was set upon the instructions of his heir Annius Perpetuus- who does not seem to have been a fellow soldier, but one of the civillians in the large settlement across from the fortress.

Take a look at the full list

the weights and instruments were the work of the sadly missed John Davis (who I lament in my blog entry) , if anyone can throw light on the terminology it would be appreciated.
