1973 Vindolanda Tablets?

I am reading a book right now about the Vindolanda tablets found from 1973 on. The author says the tablets only showed ink for about 15 minutes, and then vanished. Why did the ink vanish? The marks are still visible under infrared film, but not to the naked eye under normal light.

I don't have an answer for you, but the website below has loads of info on the Vindolanda tablets. You might find what your looking for there. Also, Archaeology Magazine did a lengthy article on the letters within the past 10 years.
