Sicily Travel Maps

When travelling abroad wise travellers inform themselves upfront about their destination. Online maps for the destination of your choice is a great way to get the basic facts, but obviously a computer with online connection won't always be available when you travel. It is essential to have a map of the region actually in your hands. Don't forget!.

The Strait of Messina is the narrow section of water between the eastern tip of Sicily and the southern tip of Calabria. A natural whirlpool forms there, which has been linked to the legend of Scylla and Charybdis. A ferry connects Messina (Sicily) with the mainland at Villa San Giovanni and Reggio in Calabria. There is also a hydrofoil service from Messina to Reggio di Calabria. In 1957 a 220-kV overhead powerline was built across the Strait of Messina. Its pylons are among the highest of the world. This powerline has since been replaced by an underwater cable, but the pylons are still there because they are under monumental protection.

When to buy Travel Maps

Make sure you order with plenty of time to spare in advance of your trip. Even though shipping is generally fast in the modern world, waiting too long to order could be a problem as glitches can occur. You'd rather have the travel map in your hands a bit earlier then not having one at all at departure.

Most of Sicily's motorways (autostrade) run through the northern portion of the island—the most important ones being A19 Palermo-Catania, A20 Palermo-Messina, A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo and the toll road A18 Messina-Catania. Much of the motorway network is elevated by columns due to the mountainous terrain. The road network in the south of the country consists largely of well-maintained secondary roads.

Sicily is connected to the Italian peninsula by the national railway company, Trenitalia, though trains are loaded onto ferries for the crossing from the mainland. Officially, the Stretto di Messina, S.p. A. was scheduled to commence construction of the world's longest suspension bridge, the Strait of Messina Bridge, in the second half of 2006. When completed, it would have marked the first time in human history that Sicily was connected by a land link to Italy. In October of 2006 the Italian Parliament scrapped the plan due to underwhelming support.
