Pertinax...Help?

What is this plant, anyone know? We found them in the garden when we moved in. They've come up every spring but we can't figure out what the heck they are! Pretty though, aren't they?

hmm...my mom mentioned it might be something called "grecian wind flowers" but I don't know. I've never seen them before they were growing here.

 

they are Runuculiae- anemones! very widespread in Europe in many colours, the normally like well drained sandy soil but as long as the soil is well drained and not too sunny they will try to grow -many many species and colours, but yours are particularly vivid! What a wonderful common name you have given them in America.
