  1. Is it anywhere near Macedonia?
  2. I've had fun looking at maps tonight! Alba Fucens?
  3. After your clue about British military attention I would guess the site is in Libya - but you wrote earlier that it wasn't south of the Med - so now I'm thinking it might be in Iraq.....
  4. Being a novice but an obsessive one I agree with the theory that an economic decline was the foremost factor in the collapse of the Roman Empire (Western) It appears that the trade imbalance was just too great to sustain an empire, combined with the other less important issues such as mass migration, disease etc This is such an interesting topic which has obviously exercised thinkers for ages without any real answers
  5. This is really difficult - mainly because we have had some (lots) wine here Down Under to celebrate a certain wedding in post Roman Britain Are we in the Black Sea region?
  6. Guess that makes me the first person to have voted Cinematic Representations as the reason why I got interested in Rome:D . Good on you! I'll be interested in your future posts - I'm also interested in the Vietnam war - what is shown in movies as fact is sometimes definitely not always what really happened
  7. This is certainly a hard one to pick especially for a novice like me, however as I'm really enjoying my trip around the Roman Empire while I try to identify your site, I'll keep on going! My pick for tonight is Albania .......
  8. Looks a bit like my backyard at present Is it a site on Crete?
  9. I chose politics and personalities - even though I'm interested in all aspects of ancient Rome Being an avid observer of politics in my country, it's natural for me to investigate how politics worked so long ago - and of course, learn about some fascinating characters along the way! The other thing not specifically mentioned in the poll is the Latin language - being in the health profession, I have used Latin terminology - sometimes without knowing the Latin - such as b.d meaning twice a day - now I know it in Latin I just never realised how much of English is derived from Latin!
  10. Is it in Prague? I'm a bit rusty with patron saints from Europe but I think St Wencelas was from there - and there are Roman ruins there
  11. Perhaps a clue might be coming soon....
  12. Yes- the church looks very middle European - except that palm tree led me to Spain! One thing for sure I'm wishing I had the time and money to visit all these wonderful places I'm looking at - and another thing is what a grand way to learn more about the ancient Romans by looking at a lovely photo and then reading a bit about that site's history In fact one day I hope to take part in some serious discussions here! Back to the search......
  13. Am I in the right place - Spain or Portugal? That's where I'm searching
  14. That is a stunning photo - it looks so peaceful Now for some research
  15. Hatra. Yes Kosmo you're correct - another fascinating place - this particular thread has really been wonderful for my crash course in ancient Roman history
  16. One of my favourite quotes by Cicero Suum cuique pulchrum est - To each his own is beautiful This topic got me searching the internet and it's just amazing just how many Latin quotes and sayings are still being used !
  17. I've just gone way back to the start of this thread and actually read the rules! I think this one is OK because it is a Parthian city.....and there is a Roman connection or two
  18. Hmm . . . and I'm feeling a little more ignorant each time I see one of these dmnable photos that I can't identify! To start the ball rolling, I'd say that it was east of a line between the Nile Delta and the Bosphorus. Yes.....correct
  19. Time for another pic - looking for sites is a great way to discover things about ancient history - I'm feeling a little less ignorant each day
  20. Maybe a little clue? Please? It's a very ordered and neat site isn't it?
  21. That was quick Bryaxis Hecatee! And of course you're correct so go for it!
  22. Thanks Melvadius! I'm certainly enjoying this forum immensely - I'm so glad I visited Rome last year where my main aim was to spend a few days just looking at St Peters and theVatican museum but my son dragged me into the Colosseum and into the Forum - I was hooked!
  23. Thanks for the advice on how to post a pic - hopefully this will turn up on the page This is the next place for some good guesses...fingers crossed it appears
