Yes, I think somewhere I've read the soldiers ditched the heavy armor such as the breastplate, and switched to using more lighter chain mail

Thanks for the insightful response A couple further questions: If so many of these barbarians were recruited in the army as foederati, weren't the Romans afraid of a large scale barbarian revolt in the army? Did they occur frequently?

What were the various units of the Roman army in the 300's AD? How different were they from the second and third century, and what caused the changes in the army? Thanks
