  1. Also Claudius's predecesor Caligula had been contemplating an invasion but decided againest it. Claudius needed a military victory and Caligula had already made plans for it.
  2. For more info on this go Here They credible evidence as explained in the Carthage area of that site is that there have been structures found in the Ogio river valley with Punic writing. The theory is that they did not intentionally go there but were blown there by a storm.
  3. 1. It is unknown whether or not they made colonies 2.see # one 3. Yes they did propose trade and it is believed they trader with their own coins and received tobacco and other plants in return(Egyptian Pharohs have been discovered with tobacco in their mummified mouths and since the Egyptians were not excellent mariners it is believed this was gotten for them by the Phonecians or Carthaginians) 4. Carthaginan coins and structures have been found in the Ohio river valley and wreaks of their ships have been found off of the U.S east coast
  4. Warbands would be the common formation. The greek/etruscan influence probably means they were more disciplined than some cultures (ie - they could keep a straight line) but the tactics would have been somewhat primitive compared to later periods. A more individualistic 'heroic' style of combat would have occurred. We see this sort of thing in the tale of Horatius guarding the bridge. Another fact is when using cavalry they used the common for that era, two horse carriage with a bowman and a driver in the chariot.
  5. Intresting Fact: The Carthaginans also Circumvented Africa, may have placed furthur colonies there and there are rumors they may have even reached the Americas. Go here For more info
  6. Maybe there were resourses he thought were there or maybe because the Bedouins were considered great warriors or maybe he just wanted more land
  7. Well I've been doing research and personally I think it was the Azores because a document by Hanno the man who founded the colony said it was an equal distance from Cerne to the straits of Gibralter/Hercules as the straights to Carthage.
  8. Have any of you heard of the lost Carthaginean colony of Cerne and know where it is? I have some theories but want to test them againest others.
  9. I personally feel Mithradates the Great was an excellent leader though there are probably other much greater ones because even though he was repeatedly beaten he still made his lands prosperous. Even his defeats were not of his own doing, most often he left his generalships to less capable men because there was none as great as him. His own death was the fault of his son not himself.
